NAME: HENRY KANGETHE
BAND: SLUM DRUMMERS
LOCATION: WAITHAKA DAGORETTI
I’m a musician with the Slum Drummers a registered community based organization. It consists of 11 (8boys and 3 girls) talented musicians from Waithaka, Dagoretti. We have been trained on music since 2005 by an Italian artist called Giovanni Lo Cascio.
Our characteristic is to use recycled/poor materials to craft our own instruments. Our music is a fusion between Afro beats and rhythms coming from different traditions, not only from Kenya but also from other parts of the world such as West Africa, Brazil and Cuba just to mention a few.
The group started in the year 2005 as one of many projects within Amref child in need project. It started as Jua kali Drummers but later changed to Slum Drummers in 2011 after an agreement with Amref that the group had to be independent. We started digging deep into music which we continue to do because this is our field of creative. We have done one show so far and it has allowed us to travel to different avenues and now we are working on another show.
Vision: our vision is to work towards sustainability and share musical practices and social topics with young people to encouraging them to stay away from drugs, alcohol and other risks they are likely to encounter.
MISSION: To enrich our capacity in music in order to reach out to the street children, the youths and others within the borders of Kenya and beyond with the message of hope.
