My Creative Journey / Creative Lifecycle
From as far back as I can remember, I always wanted to write. There being no writing courses in college when I finished high school, I joined the University of Nairobi’s Department of Literature which offered the closest thing to this. My first publication, a teen novella, came out when I was in third year I later wrote a childrens books, short stories and poetry that have been published in various anthologies, magazines and newspapers. Presently, I am interested in opening a publishing company to potentially meet needs outside of the textbook market within Kenya and the wider African market.
To make Kenya a headquarters of the world in terms of ideas and imagination
To make reading, writing and creativity exciting
Published fiction: To Grasp at a Star (EAEP, Nairobi, 2005), The Shy Girl (Oxford University Press, Nairobi, 2010), and poetry and short stories in The Jambula Tree and Other Stories (Jacana Media, South Africa, 2008), Pumpkin Seeds and Other Gifts (Femrite, Kampala, 2009), Fresh Paint (Amka, Nairobi, 2011) and The Pleasures of Peppermint: Finish and African Writers in Correspondence (WSOY, Helsinki, 2012) among others. To Grasp at a Star won three major local awards at its inception and is currently on the Kenyan secondary school syllabus recommended reading list.
What am I carrying away from the course? A network and community of fellow dreamers and believers.
